Aarhus Teater, Aarhus, Denmark
Aarhus Teater is Denmark’s largest provincial theatre. Opened in 1900, it is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture. The stunning 700 seat main stage auditorium is complemented by the 285 seat Scala stage and the 100 seat Studio stage.
Its performances are highly acclaimed, and the theatre is considered one of the most important theatres in Northern Europe.
Due to several restructuring measures over the course of more than 100 years, Aarhus Teater was not only behind with its technical infrastructure, but also urgently needed restructuring. After many adjustments, it was important to create a clear layout for the Fly Tower, increase productivity and transform it into a safe working space.
This made it necessary to create a new layout of the fly grid and addtional gallery levels with new access routes to connect these levels. The orchestra pit was also completely redesigned and the fixed stage edge was dismantled. The new layout provided more space for musicians and contributed significantly to flexibility by allowing the orchestra podiums to be placed at auditorium floor level to increase the capacity of the auditorium. This measure made it also possible to change the shape of the stage edge to its original curved shape, which adapts much better to the shape of the seating rows than the recent straight shape.
The stage technology systems were completely renewed. The old mixed hydraulic and counterweight fly machinery system was replaced with 38 motorized winches. The wire ropes of the winches were installed below the fly grid to create a clean fly loft. Movable point hoist winches can now be used anywhere on the fly grid. The proscenium bridge was dismantled and replaced by a bridge suspended from the fly bars that can be placed anywhere in the fly tower.
The old turntable has been replaced with a turntable with revolving ring to accommodate different set layouts and new scenic designs. The orchestra pit elevators have been replaced with double-deck podiums that can now descend to level -2.
The entire production lighting system as well as audio and video systems were replaced with latest technology.
